Waiting for that long-anticipated acceptance letter from your child’s chosen college or CEGEP can feel like holding your breath for weeks. When a rejection arrives instead, it can easily feel like the end of the road. But with the right support, this moment can become a powerful opportunity for growth. Experts at LaSalle College share how parents can help their children reframe rejection—not as a failure, but as a fresh start.

Accepting the Situation

A college rejection can be a hit to a young person’s confidence, often bringing stress and disappointment. As a parent, it’s important to acknowledge what your child is feeling and help them see the situation as temporary.

"Practice active listening with empathy. Recognize your child’s emotions, let them know these feelings are real and valid, and that a rejection does not define who they are."
— Dana Chernov, Social Work Technician, LaSalle College

Dana also notes that reminding your child of their strengths and accomplishments can go a long way in rebuilding their confidence.

Exploring New Opportunities

When one door closes, others open—sometimes to paths that are even more in tune with your child’s goals and interests. Programs that weren’t initially on the radar may lead to equally fulfilling careers. Take the time to explore these options with faculty and the guidance team.

"A path that differs from the original plan can lead to new learning, unique experiences, encounters with new people, and fresh opportunities."
— Emma Minuk, Social Work Counselor, LaSalle College

Many Roads to Success

Your child might discover a passion for fields like design, education, business, tourism, video games, fashion, or information technology. "Considering other options doesn’t mean abandoning their dream—it means exploring other ways to achieve it," says Dana Chernov.

LaSalle College offers over 60 programs, including both pre-universityat the same cost as public institutionsand technical training that reflect today’s job market realities.
