Kiana, tell us more about your experience after your DEC in Arts, Literature and Communication - Culture and Media Option.

After my Arts, Literature and Communication program, I had multiple opportunities to work in media-related jobs. An organization even showed their interest in hiring me as soon as I completed my program at LaSalle College.

I began working as a print layout designer and illustrator for books used to teach the Mohawk language at the Kahnawake Language and Cultural Centre. It was so pleasant to work with other talented creators on interesting projects.

I felt prepared and confident in the work force.

How did your training at LaSalle College contribute to your success?

My program allowed me to experience how creative projects are conceived and executed. It also allowed me to develop skills which made me more independent. I learned how to use multiple mediums in both art and technology, which helped me create my own brand.

The Portfolios platform helped me display my work and allowed me to get in contact with my current employers.

This process also taught me the importance of branding and marketing, which is how I gained success as a DJ. I managed to play shows at Place des Arts, Saw Gallery in Ottawa, Festival Présence autochtone, Cinéma Québec, and a weekly radio show on 103.7 FM.

The program allowed me to develop my interests into a professional career, and for that I'm so grateful.

What is your best memory of the time spent at LaSalle College?

My best memory has to be the environment. It was inspiring to be surrounded by the creativity of my peers and teachers. As you got in the elevator, you'd meet photographers, painters, fashion designers, animators...

Everyone was really supportive of each other's goals and I think that's so important.

What was your favorite subject in the Arts, Literature and Communication program?

My favorite subject was Conceptualization and Planning of a Media Event. This class was so interesting because it allowed me to use the skills I had previously learned and put them to use to create an event.

We also got the opportunity to explore different artistic and cultural events around Montréal, which helped give me an understanding of what kind of opportunities are out there.

What was your general feeling when you arrived at the school?

During my first month, I felt as though I was becoming a new version of myself. My teachers created a hands-on experience which allowed me to draw inspiration from everything around me.

Every day, I was learning something new about myself and the city of Montréal, and this became important for my art.

Overall, I felt inspired. I was so inspired by everyone and everything around me.

What advice would you give a student presently enrolled in the Arts, Literature and Communication program?

My advice would be to enjoy the experience because it goes by quickly. Make note of the process you're taught on how to complete your creative projects, because in the job market it's very similar.

Learn organizational skills and time management, because it will really help in the long run. Keep a journal to write down your creative thoughts and ideas throughout the day. Lastly, stay healthy, hydrated and get enough sleep, because taking care of yourself is also crucial for success.

What surprised you most when you entered the job market?

I was surprised by the similarities between the processes of completing certain creative projects. For example, as a print design director, I had to help a team of artists to create a graphic novel. I guided them in a way similar to how my teachers guided me with my projects.

Also, the organizational skills and time management I had worked on while in school allowed me to succeed in my jobs.

What are the keys to success in your field?

Management skills are essential to keep up with production of books that I create and weekly radio shows.

Knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite is crucial to my success, it has allowed me to complete my jobs and projects.
