Spotlight on Our Graduates

Meagan Lall

From a very young age, I was not sure what I wanted to do with my life. One day, I realized that my love of artistry could be more than just my hobby: it could actually be my career. I just needed some better guidance. After doing my research, I came across LaSalle College and attended the “Student for a day” event. It solidified my choice, and I applied to the Artistic Makeup program. I can say now that this was the only time I ever enjoyed school. I truly felt like I was in the right place. I knew it would become a place where I could excel and challenge myself, surrounded by individuals who shared the same passion.

My studies at LaSalle College formed the foundation for everything that I have achieved today. I learned all the basics necessary to move forward in the beauty industry. The program provided me with a curriculum for gaining knowledge on many types of clients with a variety of concerns. I was also able to learn in a comfortable environment catered to students who want to be creative and step outside their comfort zone. Many artists are self-taught, but I really lacked the basis of what was needed and the guidance to know where I wanted to go with it, and LaSalle College helped guide me to the career path I wanted.

After receiving my diploma, I wanted to work for a beauty retailer to get the most immediate hands-on experience with clients. I wanted to apply makeup for real clients with real concerns, who would challenge me to be a better artist. After weeks of interviews, I received the job offer that I was hoping for, as a Beauty Consultant for Sephora. I learned from each and every one of my clients and pushed my limits. I listened to my colleagues and adapted to the best practices, which allowed me to be promoted to Senior Artist. During that time, I had the opportunity to meet several artists and brand founders. I gained a tremendous amount of experience.

A few years later, I moved on to Sephora’s sister company, Kendo, as the Sales and Education Executive for the Quebec Region. It is definitively my ideal position because it combines everything I love about all the aspects of my job.

I am very proud of the success I have achieved after completing my studies at LaSalle College. It has taken a lot of hard work and determination, but I am so proud of the professional relationships and experiences that I have gained throughout my professional career. Without my continued hard work, I would not be in the position I am in today.

My advice for future students would be to always continue your development even after you receive your diploma. Your studies are just the beginning. Nothing is set in stone once you graduate, but you will have received the perfect base you need. Especially in today’s world of artistry and social media, not everyone knows how important it is to have solid foundations in makeup. Without a full understanding of that basic knowledge, you can easily lose your credibility. So, ask all your questions and do not be afraid of stepping outside of your comfort zone to figure out your own style. It will make you a more solid and trustworthy artist, believe me!

Always cheer on and respect other fellow artists and brands. We are all in this industry together. Finally, never turn down a job. Relationships and experiences are everything. You should never stop learning and growing, so whether it is a paid or volunteer project, take it!
