Spotlight on Our Graduates

Amal Afoussi

My love affair with makeup essentially started during my studies at LaSalle College. My teacher Jacques Besner played a major role in my view of the makeup world. His palpable passion, experience and knowledge of the history of makeup made him a true makeup bible. His self-discipline and passion were undeniably guiding principles in the choices I have made.

My first real experience was as official makeup assistant for L’Oréal Canada on the TV show Le style est dans la rue (“Style is in the street”). You could almost call it my initiation! From then on, I diversified myself in terms of techniques, finding myself exposed to extraordinary situations in the worlds of fashion, film and stage production. I was also very fortunate for my services to be called on abroad, for private Master Classes, weddings and events.

Over the course of my career, I have been quoted in several fashion magazines, including Vogue Italia. I have worked for Kanye West, Jean Paul Gaultier, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Cirque du Soleil and on the set of X-Men: Apocalypse, to name but a few.

The best advice I could give on how to be successful in this industry, is to assume the role of an unrelenting entrepreneur: technical skills alone are not enough these days. Your qualification isn’t a means in itself, it is the start of a learning journey: never stop improving your art, there are always still things to learn or improve on. Foster a curious spirit, draw inspiration from those you admire, venture out of your comfort zone, and continually create.
