The Bold Journey of Fecal Matter
Ten years ago, at LaSalle College, two young designers, Hannah Rose Dalton and Steven Raj Bhaskaran, began their journey in the world of design. Today, after making their mark in the fashion industry with prestigious collaborations such as Balenciaga, Rick Owens, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Madonna, they returned to their former school to share their story and inspire the next generation. In an exclusive masterclass, they opened up about the behind-the-scenes of their journey, their challenges, and the keys to their success.

It All Started at LaSalle College
The duo met during their first year of fashion school, where they quickly recognized their creative complementarity. Hannah, more methodical and organized, and Steven, more spontaneous and chaotic. This duality fueled their creativity, allowing them to develop a unique vision. According to them, their collaboration is based on a special chemistry, where their differences aren't obstacles but sources of inspiration.
An Aesthetic That Breaks the Molds

Fecal Matter doesn't do things halfway. From the start, they chose to challenge conventions with bold designs and makeup that pushed boundaries. Drawing from gothic, futuristic, and almost inhuman influences, Hannah and Steven quickly caught the attention of the fashion industry with a radically new and avant-garde vision. Between Vogue and Antidote Magazine, they brought a unique approach, injecting a breath of fresh air and provocation, offering an unexpected alternative to the often conservative norms.
Showing Ingenuity

Faced with material costs, Hannah and Steven had to show remarkable ingenuity. To stay creative while minimizing expenses, they repurposed found objects into fashion pieces. For example, they made dresses out of broken umbrellas and handbags out of wigs. This period of financial strain became a catalyst for their creativity, teaching them to make the most of limited resources and create pieces that defied conventions.

Their efforts eventually attracted the attention of major figures in the fashion world. They collaborated with celebrities like Madonna, who incorporated their creations into her performances, and worked with designers like Rick Owens, who taught them the importance of maintaining a strong artistic vision. A key moment in their rise was their collaboration with Balenciaga Couture, where they were given carte blanche to photograph the collection with complete artistic freedom. This project served as the reward for years of hard work and unwavering conviction.

Advice for the New Generation
During their masterclass, Hannah and Steven shared valuable advice with the students. They emphasized the importance of mastering a wide range of skills, from sewing and styling to art direction and marketing. “Fashion is, above all, a profession that requires versatility. Be ready to learn everything, even the aspects you don’t enjoy.” They also highlighted that difficult moments are essential for growth: “It’s these challenges that shape creators.”.
Encouraging students to take risks and seize unexpected opportunities, they added, “The path to success is never linear.”.
As they celebrate their 10th anniversary as graduates of LaSalle College, Hannah and Steven continue to inspire the next generation to follow their own path with confidence and authenticity.
